Fat Pants & A Uniform

argyleandapricots uniform1

If I had a choice, I would wear a uniform everyday.  I told my daughter that and she replied “Well, no one is stopping you”.  Yes, I know that I can were a uniform if I wanted to, smart aleck, but I want more than that. I would like it to be socially acceptable.

There are many times in my life when I am not at the prime weight for my height.  Luckily I am currently in a down swing with my weight, but during those fluctuations up, I generally sport what I call “my uniform”.  Ok – my fat pants.  I have 2 pairs of Daisy Fuentes cargo pants that I purchased when I was pregnant with Gracie.  They are not maternity pants (though I love maternity undies read about that here) but like the loaves and fish they kept on giving. They never ceased to fit. As I lost the baby weight, the cargos still held their shape and fit fine up to about 15 lbs over my ideal weight. So when desperate times call for desperate measures  (and I consider my occasional status as a certified heifer desperate) I will wear them everyday, alternating taupe and green.  I refuse to buy new clothes at the larger size because once I lose some weight, I don’t ever want to actually admit that I am going to get back up there.  I do, but if I don’t own a slew of larger sizes then I never have to resign myself to existing at that weight for a long period of time. Does that make sense?  It doesn’t to my husband but I understand my logic so I carry on.

I want more than the big girl uniform, though.  I want to have a daily outfit that I wear and not have to worry that Perryann won’t want to be seen with me because “your wearing that AGAIN, mother”? I want it to be completely acceptable that on Monday, Wednesday and Friday I am in my Lands End blue polo shirt with khaki pants and on Tues/ Thurs, I am in the white Izod polo with a cute blue tennis shirt.  Saturday and Sunday are free days but preferably a cute track suit is optimal.  I am fine with my individual style and creativity playing out in original hairdos and darling argyle socks.  Is that wrong?

I am not asking for societal conformity and I think it would be a little too George Orwell if Obama instituted mandatory American uni’s, but I wouldn’t mind if someone passed a statute that allowed for adult uniforms and had an amendment stating that women over 40 shall not be criticized, mocked, nor have candid photos of them uploaded to a website ridiculing their non-diversified style.

Anyone else see the ease and joy that would come from assigned fashion?

LOL – Lori, you crack me up.

For 7 years I went to a Christian school that had uniforms. I LOVED IT. Get up in the morning, dig your skirt out from under your bed and put it back on again. [just wear a clean shirt and it's totally acceptable.] ;) I went to a public school my jr. and sr. year, and it was a shock to me to have to wear something different EVERY DAY. Come on!!

So, I’m totally on board with your adult uniform idea.

Currently my three year old believes that her chicken costume is her uniform. She wore it to the library yesterday.

This is hilarious! I am, at this very moment, stressing about what to wear for that conference next weekend. (well, in between trying not to be sick and wondering if I’ll feel well enough to actually prepare for the conference) I love clothes … and yet, I always struggle with what to wear … 38 years old in a smallish size … I don’t wanna look like a teenager nor a frumpy old lady … a clear cut list of appropriate outfits for every age/every size would totally make my life easier!

Wear whatever you want, you are beautiful and sexy to me!

I have a pseudo uniform… it always has the base of Jeans and rainbow flip flops… some days I dress up the top, most Comfortable days I wear a tshirt and maybe scarf thing to not seem like I’m trying to be the 15 year old Roxy girl! My happiest day you will see me in RIPPED up jeans (takes a lot of good times to get jeans ripped just right) and a tshirt!

I think we all do wear uniforms, we just don’t match. We all have our favorite go to clothes that are functional and comfortable; when it is warm outside, I will almost always be in a pair of cargo pocket shorts and a Hawaiian shirt, when the weather is cool, it’s blue jeans or khakis, t-shirt or long-sleave button down, and hooded sweat-shirt or leather jacket. On rare occasions I will put on a suit, but those occasions are few and far between. I do not subscribe to the theory of public acknowledging that we are all wearing our own uniforms, let’s face it if the fashion industry gets wind of this, they’ll screw it up. I can totally relate to not wanting to shop for larger sizes, if we have “fat pants” we justify not losing weight because we either have to go shopping for new clothes or have our clothes altered. Now I totally get that some people like to shop, and that is perfectly fine, I am just not one of those people. Occasionally we do have to get new “fat pants” because somehow at some point in time, our “fat pants” cross the line between “fashionably worn” and ratty, but that is subject to the individual’s interpretation. So wear what you want as often as you want, that is my take on it.

sweatshirt and jeans…the uniform I can be found in most winter days spent at home…i whole-heartedly agree. I ALWAYS stress over what to wear. if so much of my identity wasn’t wrapped up in what I look like I would probably be a more productive person. But then…I’m sure that if unis were instituted “I’d stress over who looked better than me in theirs.

Thanks for the comments. I feel much better about this. If you see me in my khakis and polos know that I am sporting them with confidence!

Count me in!!! I have close-to-zero fashion sense anyway, so this would definitely help me on a daily basis. My closet is full of clothes I never wear because I don’t know HOW. LOL

I pretty much have a uniform. Jeans, running shoes, and a plain t-shirt (usually black, blue, or gray, but occasionally white or red). In the summer I substitute shorts and flip flops. Do I think it’s boring? Yes. Have I ceased to care, trading originality and creativity for comfort. Yes. Do I care? No. Am I getting old? Probably.

OOPS! Another theory gone awry…….Why? Well, my 39+ year old wife still looks 33 and is still petite! ONIONFORMS “notice spelling” would look horrible on her, UNLESS!!! It was a mini skirt, tight top, bobbie socks, white tenni’s. That would make her look about 25 (:>) How do I know? Well, when we married, she was 25. She dressed up like above except she added her H.S. Band Letter Sweater. We went on a date (big diamond ring on finger.) I GOT DIRTY LOOKS ALL NIGHT!!! WHY? Dressed like that @ 25, she looked 16! So! PLZ no ONIONFORMS

I’d love to wear a uniform everyday…unfortunately, wearing my running clothes, and big bulky sweatshirts don’t cut it at the office!! Too bad, I am sure I would be far more productive!!!

Thanks for the comments all. Sorry faithcowboy, I am gonna vote uniform any day of the week. Thanks for commenting Patti. Awesome that you are on here.

Amber, I am with you. Let’s get it going and make it the norm for Moms. We can still be cute, just practical and easy.
