Do You Take the Toilet Paper When You Move?

argyleandapricots toilet paper

We were at a birthday party this past weekend at a house that Gracie had never been at before. It is an adorable almost “wood streets” home built in the 20’s maybe 30’s. It has charm and period architecture with cut outs and built in’s and a bathroom that has what appears to be well maintained original tile…stuff I love.

As we are walking through the house, I was commenting to Gracie about all the items I loved, “Oh, Gracie , I love those french doors” or “Ah, Gracie, look at the built in cabinets”. She joined in and as we went in the bathroom she looked to the left where the toilet was sort of hidden behind the door and said ” Oh, Mom, what a great place for the potty”.  It was. Good observation. Then she asked the greatest bathroom question ever. And yes, better than the over or under debate:

“When you move, do you take the toilet paper that is already on the roll or do you leave it for the next people?”

What? I’ve never thought about that before. I had to think. I don’t know. What is customary etiquette? I would like to say that I would leave it just to be nice but in reality does the new person really want my toilet paper? They don’t know me. I could be diseased and bacteria ridden. I don’t want their toilet paper in case they are diseased or bacteria ridden so what makes me think they would want mine? It is better etiquette to actually take the toilet paper so as to not leave the new owner with what they perceive as something that would need to be thrown away. Or would they think we were inconsiderate by not setting them up for success on moving day? I don’t leave the soap in the shower. I know that is different…or is it?

What do you say? Take the toilet paper or leave it?

I say leave it, when you’re moving in you always seem to forget impt stuff like this on moving day.

  2. Melinda Says:

Definitely take it! But it should be the last thing you grab because it will be the first thing you need when you get to the new place!

I will leave it for you. The reality is that you would use it while visiting(and would be happy they left it there for your visit). So why not use it if they suddenly moved out and left you the house during your visit. Oh! it might be because you know what kind of disease ridden soul had just left it for you. It is the fear of the unknown smearer that grabs the sides of the roll while never quite using enough paper for proper insulation. Yep! I said it. I will still leave it for you.

That is what I was thinking. Leave it to help out the people that are moving in in case they forget or take it cuz you know you are going to need it moving. I suppose this could be solved with 2 rolls. One you take one you leave.

Yes, brotherb that too. I am afraid of the smearer! I know I am not one who smears but I dont know if others are or not.

Definitely leave it. It’s easy to throw out if you don’t want it. You usually have people helping you move in, and boxes are stacked everywhere… when someone needs to pee, it becomes very inconvenient to be searching through boxes in all the chaos while doing the pee-pee dance. and I would feel totally resentful if the former owners took it with them, I would just judge them for being cheap.

I always leave just a partial roll for the next people. That way, if they have an emergency there’s something for them to use, but if they decide to throw it away it’s not a whole wasted roll. I also always have a new roll in a very handy spot for when we arrive at a new place.

I have honestly never once thought about this. I suppose, though, now I will be certain to leave a roll … maybe even an unopened package of four … could be a ministry. :)

Great idea, Teri Lynne. I’m moving this month. Maybe I will leave a special “pack” for the new residents.

I always take it! We rent, and I know that the cleaning crew will just throw it away if I don’t! :)
