Smart Car, Cigarettes and Alanis Morissette
Fri, May 14, 2010

Twice yesterday I saw the same woman driving a smart car and smoking a cigarette. My first thought when I see something like this happening is…why would you buy a Smart car?
If you own a “smart” car and do something “stupid” in it doesn’t that cancel out the perceived smartness? Another oxymoron of sorts? That’s two in two days, a two-fer, if you will. I’m on a roll.
Or is that a distant cousin or drunk uncle of the oxymoron or not one at all?
Am I pulling an Alanis? Is “rain on your wedding day or a free ride when you’ve already paid and the good advice that you just didn’t” take..irony? (If you’re lost – go here child of the millennium or our dear golden oldies).
Is it possible that I am just using the literary device to my own advantage as Alanis did in ‘97?
The answer is yes, yes I am.
To top it off, Alanis received a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year and sold 30 million copies of her album Jagged Little Pill. I’m gonna say the marginal and improper use of irony has served her well.
Maybe oxymoron will do the same for me.

You and I share a brain…or something. The Alanis song has ALWAYS bothered me! It’s like, get a dictionary already! All of the things in her song are not ironic. They are simply unfortunate.
